1864 Indian Head Cents
As mentioned before, there were two distinct types of Indian Head cents struck in 1864: the thick mustard-colored copper-nickel 1864 cent, and the thinner, pure copper 1864 cent from later in that year.

James Barton Longacre, the designer of the "Indian Head" cent, used his daughter Sarah as his model for Liberty wearing an Indian headdress.

The only major difference between nickel coins and other coins is that spots are slightly more detracting on nickel than on silver or gold but less detracting than they are on copper coins.

The Indian Head cent series contains several rarities. The 1877 is the rarest date in all states of condition followed by the 1909-S. An 1877 piece in average circulated condition is worth about $600 while the 1909-S is valued at $375.

I had a U.S. Indian Head cent tie clasp as a kid. I recently looked around for something similar and found it but quickly realized I wanted something better. The further back in time you go, the more interesting it becomes.

When grading Indian Head cents, the first places to show wear on the obverse will be the hair above the ear and the curl to the right of the ribbon; on the reverse, check the bow knot.

Copper-nickel Indian Head cents were minted annually from 1859 through 1864, with a total of about 158 million being madeall in Philadelphia. Proofs were struck each year as well.

Starting in 1860, Indian Head cents used the shield motif at the top of the wreath on the reverse. Shield nickel Common name for the Shield five-cent coin struck from 1866 until 1883.

Let's assume you would like to complete an entire set of Indian Head cents. As mentioned above, this is a very doable project. As mentioned earlier, most all dates are available.

Of the 1909 Indian Head cents, we made them at both Philadelphia (plain, or no mint mark) and San Francisco (with a "S" mint mark). In Philadelphia, we made 14,370,645 Indian Head cents. In San Francisco, we only made 309,000 Indian Head cents.

It was adopted in 1909, replacing the Indian head cent; its obverse, featuring a bust of Abraham Lincoln, has been in continuous usage, while its reverse was changed in 1959 to its current design which includes the Lincoln Memorial.

Lovett struck 12 pattern pieces in copper-nickel, the alloy being used at the time to make federal Indian Head cents.

He designed the 1856-1858 Flying Eagle cent; 1859-1909 Indian Head cent; 1864 two-cent coin; 1849-1854 Liberty Head Type I, II, and III gold dollar; 1854-1886 three-dollar gold coins; and the 1849-1907 Liberty Head Double Eagle ($20 coin).

Since he lives in an area that saw heavy action in the early years of the war, many of his finds are copper nickel Flying Eagle or Indian Head cents. Most are in miserable condition with surfaces eaten away by the century of burial.

It is also true that there are a lot of phony 1916-D Mercury dimes and 1877 Indian head cents. It only takes a little experience to spot a fake, once you know what the genuine item looks like. So it is with ancients.

Nearly all previous coins had depicted women (Liberty head nickels, Indian head cents, Barber and Morgan silver dollars). A male head has larger, coarser features (nose, chin, brow) that can be altered in many ways.

(With only three known exceptions. One is from the 1800s - a double-head Indian Head Cent. Another is a two-tailed Washington Quarter. The third is a two-tailed dime from the 1980s.) ...

Collectors have always known these coins, however, as `Indian head cents'. The weight was reduced and the composition altered again in 1864 to 95 per cent copper and 5 per cent tin and zinc (bronze); the design remained unchanged until 1909.

They shield as a single motif first appeared on the two-cent coins of 1864, later also used on the nickels of 1866. Starting in 1860, Indian Head cents used the shield motif at the top of the wreath on the reverse.

In all 463 coins were uncovered including a 1785 Immune Columbia/Constellatio Nova pattern, a 1787 New Jersey copper, several Spanish and French coins and U.S. coins dating from a 1794 penny to a 1907 indian head cent.
