Indian Head Quarter Eagles 1908-1929
The Saint-Gaudens double eagle (or $20 gold piece) is frequently acclaimed as the single most beautiful coin in American history.

 


Indian Head quarter eagles were issued annually from 1908 through 1915.

This "Quarter Eagle" gold coin was the first intaglio or incuse design and represented a new approach for American coins.

The Indian Head Quarter Eagle 2 1/2 Gold Dollar was produced from 1908 to 1929 and designed by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt.

The Indian Head Quarter Eagle is one of only two U. S. coins with the design cut into the surface of the coin rather than raised above it.

Assuming that the Indian Head quarter eagle series stays popular with date collectors, there will be a decent level of demand for the 1914. It is, after all, the second scarcest date in the series and it does have recognition as a semi-key.

The type set collector can easily find examples of the Indian Head quarter eagle in grades from Very Fine to AU. Uncirculated pieces are scarce, and superb Uncirculated pieces are very scarce.

There's been a hullaballoo in the Professional Numismatists Guild over the rare Indian Head Quarter Eagles coins. The PNG says that these rare coins are selling for new low prices, but are valuable coin specimens.
