Intaglio
A stage in the note printing process where black ink is transferred to the sheet of notes. Ink is applied to the metal plates and then wiped clear, remaining only in the incuse design.

In coin collecting terms a method of printing using engraved plates. Paper is forced into the ink-filled lines of the plate, leaving a raised line of ink on the paper. All U.S. paper money is printed by the intaglio method.

In modern times, hubs have carried the process of die manufacture back a step further: whole dies are made from masters cut in relief and used to manufacture an intaglio image in a die; this explains why modern coins all look alike.

Bracteates (a type of coin, not a denomination) were made with very thin metal and were apparently struck using a single die with the flan placed on a leather covered block, thus giving an intaglio reverse.

If on the other hand, the design is beyond the die's face, (this is a hub or the master hub from which more dies can be made), the resultant coin will have an incuse or intaglio design.

Only the ink in the grooves would remain. The plate is then pressed against the paper and the ink transfers to the paper giving a clear impression of the image on the plate. Also know as "Intaglio" printing. ...
