Some irregularities

Unfortunately not all of the Australian Commonwealth coinage fits comfortably within the nomenclature. For a start, we have the four commemorative florins issued in 1927, 1934, 1951 and 1954.

The irregular flan makes it impossible to read the workshop letter on this coin. This mint used 6 shops so we could expect any of the first six Greek numerals. Of my coins of this period, this example wins the prize for portrait with best mullet.

Die Breaks
Raised irregular areas on a coin, the result of metal from the planchet being forced through a portion of the DIE which has broken and fallen out during the minting process.

A plug can sometimes be difficult to spot, though it can be given away by slight irregularities around the plug and a dark appearance or pits in the fields caused by heat used in the plugging process.

To receive a , coins must be free of any obvious planchet irregularities, and display no bothersome spots or blemishes. Toned coins can be of a single color or multicolored but cannot have any areas that are dark brown, approaching black.
