In 1966, almost thirty years after the Jefferson Nickel first appeared, the designer's initials (F.S. for Felix Schlag) were added to the obverse below Jefferson's bust.

This is the Jefferson Nickel collection I started with a $4 investment. I am not very artistic, so I'm sure you can do a lot better, but you can see the basic layout here. The two boxes on top are for the 1938 and 1939 nickels.

Jefferson nickels and Lincoln cents especially exhibit a large number of affected coins, throughout the entire history of the coin.

1939 Jefferson nickels are fairly common to find in change but the doubled die reverse is rather scarce but still may be found in the wild. Value: $30-$500.

War Alloy Jefferson Nickels
War is hell, especially on money. Metal was scarce during World War II. Just ask a Jefferson nickel, made of 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% manganese (the Sacagawea Dollar US silver coin also uses manganese).

A term used for a Jefferson nickel where 5 ½ or 6 steps leading up to Monticello on the coin's reverse are fully defined. Full Steps are rarer than "blended" steps are an important modifier in grading Jefferson nickels.

The distribution methods used on the Lincoln Cent and the Jefferson Nickel is what makes them more easily attainable than the higher denominations. These are shipped in bulk and sub-divided and rolled by sources outside the mint.

Refers to Jefferson nickels that were minted between 1942-1945. During WWII, nickel and copper were designated as critical strategic metals. It was during this time that the U.S.

The example at left is a recent Jefferson nickel that clearly has two additional strikes, one 75% off-center, and the other 90% off-center. The strikings are also referred to as DSBS, or Die Struck Both Sides.

The Type I proof is of the same style and composition as the usual Jefferson nickels. The Type II proof is of the WWII large mintmark style and silver composition.

Here is a rare 1942-D Jefferson nickel, with a D mintmark over a horizontal D mintmark. This repunched mintmark (RPM) brings as much as $750, compared to the $30 of the normal coin.

There have been similar issues since; the 1994 and 1997 Matte-finish Jefferson nickels, for example, are frosted SMS-type coins. There also are a few known 1964 SMS coins, these likely struck as tests in late 1964 for the new 1965 SMS strikings.

How much like paradise it would be if comparable references were available on everything else from Massachusetts silver coins minted in 1652 right down to Jefferson nickels and Lincoln cents! ...
