jugate: Accolated, conjoined. The overlapping portraits of George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette on the 1900 Lafayette Memorial commemorative silver dollar are a jugate portrait.

Jugate - Conjoined busts facing the same direction slightly offset from each other in such a way as to allow the bottom bust to be partially seen while the top bust is shown in its entirety.

Designed by Stuart Devlin the reverse of this coin features profiles of Charles and Diana (known as jugate) facing left with the legends reading "HRH The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer Fifty Cents".

Dated 1696. Obverse: Jugate bare-headed, draped busts of Ferdinand and Maria Anna right. Reverse: Crowned and mantled arms -the left of which portrays a raven plucking out the eyes of a Turk! Davenport 7702.

Corrosion
some metals corrode due to oxidation, handling, or exposure to chemicals or moisture.

The composition of jugate busts is always appealing to me. The exceptionally well rendered obverse contrasts with the rather crude reverse that has far too many muscle lines and connect-the-dot lettering.

More importantly they opposed what they perceived as imperialist aspirations by foreign nations in a rush to subjugate China.
