Julian and his half brother Gallus were spared, possibly because of their young age. In Julian's writings he claims Constantius II told him he was pressured to do what he did by the army and that he regretted his actions.

Julia Cornelia Paula was the daughter of the Praetorian Prefect, Julius Paulus. She married Elagabalus in 219 AD and he divorced her in 220 AD.

Julian, a nephew of Constantine, married Constantius' sister, and became Caesar [355]. He commanded effectively in Gaul until his troops, ordered to the Persian war, mutinied and proclaimed Julian emperor.
