JULIA MAESA was born at Emesa in Syria, daughter of Julius Bassianus, priest of the Sun, sister of Julia Domna and grandmother of Elagabalus.

Julia Maesa , sister of Julia Domna and grandmother of the boy emperors Elagabalus (218-222 AD) and Severus Alexander (222-235 AD). Her name is on the obverse, and the reverse is FECVNDITAS, a reference to "fruitfulness" of the imperial women.

He became known as Elagablus because as the son of Varius Marcellus and Julia Soaemias, he was a hereditary high priest of the Phoenician sun god, Elagabal. His grandmother was Julia Maesa, sister of Julia Domna, making him the nephew of Caracalla.
