JULIA MAMAEA, daughter of Julia Maesa, sister of Julia Soaemias, and mother of Severus Alexander. She was married to Geenesius Marcianus, by whom she had Theoclia and Severus Alexander.

Julia Mamaea, mother of Severus Alexander, AE Sestertius. Her bust rt./FELICITAS PVBLICA, Felicity stands left holding caduceus and leaning on column, SR2318. Near centered, few letters partly off top rev., dark green patina, nice portrait and rev.

Severus Alexander and Julia Mamaea were murdered by mutinous soldiers in A.D. 235.

Although Alexander was emperor, it could rightfully be said that at this time the empire was guided by a woman, his mother Julia Mamaea.

Sister of Julia Domna and mother of Julia Soaemias and Julia Mamaea. Although in exile imposed upon her by Macrinus, she let a revolt that put her grandson Elagabalus in power in 218 AD.

Julia Maesa was the mother of two daughters, JULIA SOAEMIAS and JULIA MAMAEA. Maesa and her daughters were not about to let the Roman Empire out of their grasp.

[1] shows IVLIA MAMAEA AVG, and with the letter substitution it becomes "Julia Mamaea, Augusta" (Augusta is the female version of Augustus).

Kelly Ramage was partial to the sensitive portrayal of Julia Mamaea and lovely patina on this coin. It also depicts the Tyche of Antioch one of the most celebrated sculptures of antiquity.

Our example is an AE24 of Julia Mamaea from the Colony of Deultum, Thrace. The reverse shows (again one of many types) Artemis. The reverse legend COL FL PAC DEVLT (Colonia Flavia Pacensis Deultum).
