The Kennedy Half Dollar coin was first struck in 1964, less than a year after the death of President John F. Kennedy, and evolved from the Franklin Half Dollar.

The Accented Hair variety has sharply incised hair above Kennedy's ear and is found only as a Proof. The Doubled Die obverse is available both as a circulation strike and as a Proof. The Doubled Die reverse is known only in Proof.

Kennedy's childhood was happy, even though he was always in the shadow of his older brother Joseph, who dominated family competitions and was a better student. Young Kennedy also was a frail child, with prolonged illnesses that kept him from school.

I've received several e-mails asking for the value of a Lincoln cent with an image of John F. Kennedy on it. I've also received questions about an imprint of a map of a state along with the 2 letter abbreviation.

The first Kennedy half dollars made for distribution were proofs coined early in 1964. The number of Kennedy halves produced during 1964 was enormous. Despite this, the coins continued to disappear as fast as they were issued.

Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington was born into a middle-class family in Washington, D.C., in 1899, and started piano lessons at the age of seven. He lived in Washington until 1923, when he moved to New York City.

In the Kennedy Half Dollar series, the 1964 of course is 90% silver. Halves dated 1965 through 1970 contain 40% silver.

We should also mention that the "Kennedy" series of six values printed on July 18, 1966 with the former values was changed to the new values in the serrated and non-serrated versions.

There are occasional variations to the theme such as a Kennedy half dollar mated with a Mexican 20-centavos reverse or a Lincoln cent mated with a Roosevelt ten-cent reverse or a dime mated with a foreign coin reverse, etc., that are all related.

When investing in silver coins, buyers basically have three choices of 90% silver half-dollars: 1964-dated Kennedy half-dollars, Ben Franklin half-dollars, and Walking Liberty half-dollars.

The example is a 1964 Kennedy half dollar which was struck 70% off center and cupped. The strike is exceptional, and indicative of fresh dies.

Copper - Copper core used on all circulating $.10-$1.00 from 1965 to present, except Kennedy halves listed above.

The mintages for these recent sets are extremely low! The 2008 Proof set is also a big winner. For obsolete coins, most Walking Liberty, Franklin, and silver Kennedy Half Dollars are undervalued according to many experts, but only buy high grades.
