Used in coin collecting; a key date is a date (or date and mint mark combination) of a given coin series or set that is harder to obtain than other dates in the series.

The original portrait of George V is in fairly high relief. As mentioned above, the reverse was originally kept the same as for the issue of Edward VII.
* The key date is usually the 1936 Mercury dime, so make sure any coin proof set contains one.
* If you have a 1941-1945 silver proof set, don't fret, it's still valuable, so burn offerings at the temples.

Key/Semi Key Dates
While most Barber Dimes are obtainable, one of the rarest of all coins came from this series.
The semi-key dates, also valuable, but not as significant as the "key dates" are: 1910s, 1911d, 1911s, 1912s, 1913d, 1913s, 1914s, 1915, 1921s, 1922d, 1923s, 1924d, 1926s, 1931d, and 1933d.
One of the key dates for the series is the Type 1 issue dated 1916. With a mintage of only 52,000, it has always been sought by collectors.
Key As in key date. Usually the most important date or dates in a coin series. Collectors aspire to own them and prices are therefore kept high in relation to numbers known. Important key dates include 1909-S V.D.B.

"The demand for circulated key and semi-key date coins is rapidly increasing. Activity at major shows has indicated strong demand for 19th and 20th century rare dates. Is it the collector or the investor who is buying?
Look for key dates that are worth much more than an ordinary wheat cent. Early dates including 1909,1911, 1914, and 1918 are worth a few bucks. The 1909-S, a nice amount of money over $50. However, coins like 1914-D can be worth as much as $80.
1950 D Jefferson nickel VF+ low mintage rare key date
Still in production today, the Jefferson Nickel has become a familiar coin to generations of Americans.
The key date of the series is the 1911-D. The current PCGS population of this date is 321 in MS63 with 331 graded higher. The 1914 has a population of 432 in MS63 with 320 higher.
The best place to purchase key date Jefferson Nickels is at eBay. Only the 1939-D, 1939-S, 1950-D demand higher prices but only in the higher grades. You should be able to find a nice specimen for your collection in the $10.00 or less range.
If you have a complete collection of Lincoln cents that is now waterlogged following a recent hurricane your concentration should logically focus on the key date coins.

Most are easy to find and, with the exception of some key dates, values are generally modest. Small Cents begin with the Flying Eagle Cents of 1856 to 1858, a short but surprisingly challenging series.

Many of the key dates will trade at over current price levels. There are several tough circulated grade dates in this series: the 1892 O, S, 93 S, 96 S, and 97 O, S.

Dollars regardless of condition, the keys are the 1921, 1921-D, and 1916-S, but if another collector is putting together the same set in Gem condition, the 1919-D and 1921-S would be considered keys and the 1916-S likely would not. Also Key Date.
