Knife edge - Synonym for wire edge.
Knife Rim - A result of the minting process when a piece of extruding metal on the rim of a coin caused by metal forced between the die and collar.

A thin piece of metal that has nearly become detached from the surface of a coin. If this breaks off, an irregular hole or planchet flaw is left.

Lamination
A form of planchet flaw caused by imperfections in the metal, whereby a thin strip of the metal separates itself from the coin.

Wire Edge eagle
The 1907 Indian Head eagle coin of which only 500 were struck. Technically a pattern, this design featured a fine wire rim and surfaces that were both satiny and striated.

Key Coin
The major, or most important, coin in a particular series. The "key" coin is usually the lowest-mintage coin and/or the most expensive coin in a particular set.

A misnomer for the flattened or rounded rim of the 1907 Indian $10, caused by an adjustment to the die to control the metal flow and prevent KNIFE EDGES from occurring.

Deeply mirrored fields and frosted devices combine to present a desirable cameo appearance. Very high knife edges are noted at 12:00 on the obverse and at 2:00 on the reverse, a characteristic that is often noted on aluminum patterns.

Wire Edge
The thin, knife-like projection seen on some rims created when metal flows between the collar and the dies. Also, slang for the Wire Edge Indian Head eagle of 1907. Also known as knife edge.

Slight flange on coins or medals caused by heavy striking pressure, often characteristic or proof coins. Also Knife Edge, Wire Rim. See Square Rim.
WONDERCOIN ...

a thin, wire-like section of the rim of a coin is raised above the rest of the rim along the outside. This effect is typically caused by very high striking pressure, and tends to occur mostly on proof and high relief strikings.
