The American large cent is worth at least $15 to $20 today. That is the minimum value of a coin in what dealers call "good" condition.

An overview: Large copper cents of the 1793-1857 years have attracted a sizable following of enthusiasts ever since coin collecting became popular in the mid-19th century.

Large cent - A large copper U.S. coin - issued from 1793 until 1857 - valued at one-hundredth of a dollar. It was later replaced by a much smaller cent made from a copper-nickel alloy.

2. Large central bulb on Fleurs-de-Lis
The bulbs each feature a vertical ridge which should be sharply defined in an uncirculated coin. In an EF coin the ridge will still be visible but will be somewhat rounded. VF coins will not show the ridge.

While large cents were heavily researched even in the 19th century, the number of meaningful studies of half cents can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

I have a large cent dated 1828. Any idea how much it might be worth? The face is worn off, but the date and the word Liberty are very clear.

Consider a Large Cent, 1836. A reputably certified mint state coin (60 to 63) might cost about $500. You can find a nice AU for half that and a nice Extremely Fine for half again, that is, an EF for about $75 to $125, depending.

The cumbersome large cent had worn out its welcome by 1920, and a new cent was introduced during that year, resulting in both types bearing the same date. The small cent was quite similar in dimension and composition to the cent of the USA.

The recall of the large cent precipitated a popular interest that would grow to a pastime and later to a mania - native American numismatics. But we can't stop here without introducing a couple of fascinating aftereffects.

More than 23 million of these Draped Bust coins were minted in all, large cents making up more than two-thirds of this total.
