1842-D Large Date, Large Letters

The 1842-D large date, large letters is one of the rarest half eagles struck at the Dahlonega Mint. Very rare in grades of Extremely Fine or better.

LARGE DATE (LOW 7)
There is also a medium date (not pictured) that is not mentioned very often. One should be very careful when buying a "Small Date" 1970 S to make sure that they do not get the Medium Date.

Large Date Variety
956 1846 Breen-6561. Large Date. MS-60. A satiny and lustrous specimen with rich orange toning highlights. Nicely struck. In MS-60 the 1846 is very elusive. Thus, the present piece should attract much attention.

The Large date variety has a curled base on the 2 of the date; the Small date variety has a flat based 2.

A 1796 coin with large date and large Letters (Bolender Five)
Most of them are very scarce and some a rarity.

Large cents of 1846 appear with small, medium and large dates, while 1847 coins include the bold Large over Small 7 variety. The 1855 issues show slanting (italic) or upright 5s. These two types of 5s also occur on cents of 1856.

There is a single exergue line with a large date below. On the date the 17 are close together and to the left. The bottom of Britannia's pole points just to the right of the first 7. The 8 leans to the right and the final 7 is higher and larger.

The first has a large date with the date in a curved line and a tall peak to the 1 in the date. The second variety has a small date with the date in a straight line and a flat top to the 1 in the date.

The large date US mint sets from 1970 sell for $24. If you have to squint to see the date on a 1970 cent or dime in a proof mint set it's a valuable coin.

1982 Lincoln Cents
In 1982 cents were struck with both large and small dates. The image on the left is of the large date style - note that all four digits do not fit completely within the frame. The image on the right is of the small date style.

As of January 2000, the two major grading services had recorded a total of two quarter eagles in this grade (an 1843-C Large Date at PCGS and an 1842-C at NGC) and three half eagles in this grade (an 1847-C and an MS-66 1859-C at PCGS plus an 1855-C ...
