361 1842 Large Letters. VF-20. Light yellow gold, perhaps cleaned, with minor hairlines. Two short scrapes are present in the left obverse field. This variety with Large Letters reverse is scarcer than the Small Letters variety.

1842-D Large Date, Large Letters

The 1842-D large date, large letters is one of the rarest half eagles struck at the Dahlonega Mint. Very rare in grades of Extremely Fine or better.

As it fit the available space, LIBERTY remained in large letters but was moved to the left from its former position directly above the portrait.

The first category are those coppers with large letters, which are attributed to the Company for Coining Coppers. The second major category, the small letter varieties, will be discussed below as they are attributed to Jarvis and Company.

The obverse portrait is similar to the gold but the reverse contains the Greek for 'Jesus Christ, King of Kings' in four lines of large letters.

Some US collectors even care about nearly invisible differences, such as doubled dies, small versus large letters, and tilted numerals.

The two major varieties, Large Letters and Small Letters, are reasonably easy to identify. The difference in the lettering in the AM of AMERICA is obvious. As in 1857, there are Proof and business strikes of the date to be collected.

small letters: some coins and varieties may have Small Letters, Medium Letters, or Large Letters.
Small Motto: refers to a scarce 1864 Two Cents variety that has a small "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the obverse.

Varieties trading at higher price premiums are the 1812/1 Large 8, the 1815/2, the 1817/4 (very expensive), and the 1830 Large Letters. The 1815/2 overdate is the only 1815-dated coin of the series, and fewer than 10 of the 1817/4 overdate are known.
