Large Motto Common short name for the particular variety of two-cent coin of 1864 with large letters in the motto. The inscription Â"IN GOD WE TRUSTÂ" was first used on the two-cent coinage of 1864.

 


Large Motto - Synonym for the 1864 two-cent coin with large lettering for the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST". Congress mandated this inscription for all coinage and it has been used on nearly every coin since that time.

The Large Motto lettering is more bold compared to the somewhat frail Small Motto lettering. The spacing is tighter, "WE" fills more of the ribbon. The "T" in TRUST is noticeably distant of the fold in the ribbon.

His small head of Roosevelt with large mottos was replaced by the now familiar, larger portrait with a miniscule IN GOD WE TRUST.

The most significant of these are the Small Motto and Large Motto varieties of 1864. The Small Motto is rarer and more valuable. Doubled dies, die cracks and other mint errors are often encountered in this series.

For this purpose a relatively common issue such as 1864 Large Motto or 1865 will serve the purpose well, although there is something to be said for acquiring a scarcer issue, such as one dated from 1866 through 1871, ...
