Lettering - The alphabet characters used in creating legends, mottos, and other inscriptions on a coin.

Weak Edge Lettering
Indicates the edge lettering is weaker than normal and has a portion of a letter/star or inscription missing. The missing part could be the serif of an "S" or "T" or part of a star.

Since the lettering was punched into the dies by hand, errors abound. Among these are blunders such as the "LIHERTY" error where the "B" was rotated 180 degrees before being punched and then crudely corrected, or the "T" over "Y" blunder in 1802.

Note: The lettering on this specimen is engraved in a very curious style with exaggerated serifs. Quite pleasing with a fantastic portrait.

Fishtail Lettering - Style of lettering where the end of the letters resembles a fish tail, only used on the coinage of Richard II.
Flan - The piece of metal upon which the design of the coin will be struck, also called a planchet or blank.

Curved-base lettering has only been documented (by John Dean) George V pennies (and the '31 florin). The lettering on the coins of George V is characterised by wide serifs so any curvature in the bases of those letters is clearly visible.

Missing Edge Lettering
A mint error has recently been discovered on the new Washington Presidential $1 Coins. These coins inadvertently left the United States Mint without edge-lettering on them.

Check the edge lettering on these - some come with irregular ornaments or I's between the words.

Lettered Edge
Lettering around the edge (cylindrical surface) of a coin. Opposed to PLAIN EDGE or REEDED EDGE.

Short for "Liberty" (i.e. $10 & $20 Gold Liberties, or 19th century Seated Liberty coinage).

The style of lettering may be different from the original. Tooled lettering may rise more vertically from the field of the coin than on untooled coins. Tooled lettering is often uniformly wide and the top surfaces of letters are flatter than normal.

Some coins have lettering impressed on a plain edge. This is used as an anti counterfeiting measure.

The Large Motto lettering is more bold compared to the somewhat frail Small Motto lettering. The spacing is tighter, "WE" fills more of the ribbon. The "T" in TRUST is noticeably distant of the fold in the ribbon.

Concerning the variety with the edge lettering PAYABLE AT LIVERPOOL, LONDON OR BRISTOL, Breen has stated, "This is unconfirmed, but if it exists and is not an overstrike on a British token, it would indicate a Birmingham origin for these pieces.

This piece is one of the Lettered Edge strikings, but the lettering is not visible because of the PCGS encapsulation.

Many Kushan coins still used Greek legends but the lettering began to become less clear. Upper left in this group is the most commonly seen Kushan coin.

There is moderate wear on all of the high parts of the coin and the designs and lettering have lost much of their sharpness. The original mint luster is virtually gone.

The original Burgau thalers have plain, serif ("roman") lettering, not the fancy blackforest split-ends or "forked" lettering. Be aware, however, that no one detail defines an old thaler from a restrike.

The effect is again subtle, but on the lettering in particular some of the edge "fuzz" has gone away and they look more crisp.
Possibly sharpen again.

A half inch scratch on the reverse of a Morgan dollar between the denticles and the lettering will usually cause the coin to be downgraded a point or two. That same scratch across the cheek of Ms. Liberty will probably render the coin ungradable.
