The Liberty and Security design was created at the foundry of Peter Kempson and Son of Birmingham, England in the hopes of obtaining a contract from the United States government to provide coinage.

The Liberty Head quarter eagle series was produced from 1840 through 1907. Unlike the larger denomination issues of this type, quarter eagles were never produced at the Carson City or Denver mints.

The first Liberty Head half eagle struck at the Dahlonega Mint with the mint mark below the eagle. The strike on most 1840-D half eagles is above average.

Undoubtedly one of the more interesting designs proposed for the dollar coin in recent years was the Flowing Hair Liberty Head Obverse / Eagle in Flight Reverse proposed by United States Mint Engraver, Frank Gasparro in 1977.

In 1883, a new 5-cent piece was struck with the female likeness of Liberty on the obverse and a "V" (Roman numeral 5) on the reverse. What was missing was the word "cents.

Liberty has an interesting history on coins. She disappeared for many centuries, then reappeared on French and US coins in the late 18th and early 19th century. The St. Gaudens and Liberty halves are considered the most beautiful US coins.

Liberty's portrait was based on a drawing of Philadelphia socialite Ann Willing Bingham, one of the most beautiful women of her time.

Liberty's face, rather than sporting a placid smile, is scowling. Her breast is grossly elongated. The reverse is totally lacking in central detail, including the motto. The coin has a reeded rather than lettered edge.

The liberty bell, which had been on the reverse of Franklin's half-dollar, was replaced by the eagle from the presidential seal except during 1975 and 1976, the nation's 200th birthday.

The Liberty Head series contains many rare dates prior to 1895. Most of the mintages were very low and many coins were lost due to remelting. The most commonly found coins are dated after 1895 and are worth about $150 in average condition.
