Shield nickels are worth about $12 in average condition, while Liberty nickels are worth only about $1 each. Mint marked examples are found in only one year, 1912.

No Liberty nickels were made that year officially, but years later collectors were stunned to learn that five 1913 examples had surfaced, all of them apparently made on the sly by someone at the Philadelphia Mint.

Though a contrived novelty akin to 1913 Liberty nickels, such coins would easily fetch tens of thousands of dollars each in the aftermarket.

During his tenure, he is credited with designing many MEDALS, plaques and PATTERN coinage but is best remembered for his 1879 Flowing Hair $4 STELLA, 1883 Liberty nickel and the dime, quarter and half-dollars issued between 1892-1916.

The sale consisted of 1348 lots and it realized $11,598,000. Highlights included a Gem Proof 1913 Liberty Nickel which sold for a record $1,485,000 and the unique 1873-CC No Arrows Dime that brought $550,000.

Dated coins of modern era are reasonably priced in the $5 to $8 range. I know examples exist of off-center Buffalo and Liberty Nickels. However I am not sure about the Shield or Silver wartime Jefferson Nickels.

At that same show the following coins were also exhibited: 1794, 1802 and 1804 U.S. dollars, a 1792 1/2 disme and the Bebee-McDermott 1913 Liberty nickel, which had just sold for $46,000.
