lituus - the curved staff of an augur (q.v.).
loros - an elaborately decorated garment constituting the consular dress of the Byzantine emperor.
maeander - a rectilinear pattern that appears in Greek art from the Geometric period onward.

Lituus
(lit. 'crooked') The Romans used the word in two senses. A. A short curving staff, hooked at the end, used by augurs to mark out a sacred space for the observation of birds. B.

THE LITUUS
The lituus is by way of being the "star" of Pilate coinage, not only because the two coins it illustrates (those of years 30 and 31) offer many more varieties than that of year 29 with the simpulum, ...

/Caius and Lucius caesars stand facing, simpulum left, lituus rt., struck ca 2BC-AD14, RIC 207; RSC43. Near centered obv., rev. centered slightly low with some legend weak or off, grey tone, decent portrait and clear rev., about Very Fine....

Obverse: a lituus (astrologer's staff) within an inscription. Reverse: date mark in a wreath (LIZ for AD 30/31). The specimen illustrated is far above average for this normally very poorly struck type.

These coins bear, as a rule, an inanimate object (Ear of corn, Cornucopiae, Lituus, &c.), the name of the reigning emperor or emperors, and the regnal year in Greek characters (Madden, Coins of the Jews, pp. 173 sqq.).
