major variety A coin that is easily recognized as having a major difference from other coins of the same design, type, date, and mint. See also minor variety.

Type - A major variety of a coinage such as Victorian crowns can be broken up into four different types: Young Head, Gothic, Jubilee Head and Old Head.

The Barber Half Dollar, once know as the "Liberty Head Half", was minted from 1892 to 1915 and consists of 73 regular issues, plus one major variety, the 1892 micro O. Barber halves enjoy a solid collector audience, but mostly in lower grades (AG-VF).

The Strawberry Leaf cent is a distinctive major variety within the cents of 1793.

The attempt has been made to fully document every major variety using high-quality photographs. This should allow collectors to accurately identify their coins, and buyers/sellers can agree on the coins being bought and sold.

A coin which has already been attributed by denomination, date, mintmark and major variety (such as Morgan Dollar, 1879-S, Reverse of '78) can often still be broken down by die variety.

The series contains no great rarities, and the only major variety is an 1860 cent on which the Indian's bust is pointed, rather than rounded. Mint-state examples are relatively abundant in grades up to MS-65.

In his Complete Encyclopedia, Walter Breen suggested that fewer than eight examples of this major variety are known, none Mint State.

This is because one early reference mentioning the varieties, "Major Variety and Oddity Guide of United States Coins" by Frank Spadone lists three "types" in all seven editions of his book.
