Maximinus (235-238)

Maximinus I was considered the first of the so-called soldier emperors.

Note: The Civic Issues of Antioch, Alexandria and Nicomedia were thought to have been produced by Julian II when RIC VI was written, therefore the entire series is missing.

Maximinus [b. 270], Galerius' son-in-law, became Caesar on the elevation of Galerius, and Augustus in 309 after both he and Constantine protested the elevation of Licinius as Augustus. He was a severe persecutor of Christians.

Galerius adopted and appointed as Caesar Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximinus who is known to history as Maximinus II. Some, but not all, of his coins use GAL but the lack of the extra A in the name should allow accurate separation.

Maximinus II, as Augustus, AD 309-313, AE Follis, reduced. Emperor head rt./GENIO AVGVSTI, Genius stands left, eagle at feet left, Delta to rt., SMN in exergue, Nicomedia mint, RIC71b. Centered, brown patina, nice portrait and clear rev.

Translation : "Maximinus Pius Augustus Germanicus", (Maximin pieux auguste germanique).
Description : Buste lauré, drapé et cuirassé de Maximin Ier à droite vu de trois quarts en arrière (A*2) ; portrait C.
