Medals intended to be worn, such as military and some prize medals, have additional parts. A suspension is added to the top of the medal to hold it to a suspension ring, through which a ribbon is run and folded during the mounting process.

Medallic orientation is a feature of coins. When viewing one side of a coin with medallic orientation, the coin must be flipped about its vertical axis in order to see the other side the correct way up.

The first medals were patterned after the 1950 1- Srang coins and were minted in May, 1978, in the Valcambi Mint. The issues struck were: Fine Gold Proof (500 pieces); .925 Fine Silver Proof (2000 pieces); and Cupronikel (5000 pieces).

There are many medals struck during the reign of Maria Theresia or thereafter, covering aspects of her life or accomplishments. However, only medals resembling Maria Theresia Talers are listed here.

Medals and coins have a lot in common. The first coins were invented about 650 BC in Lydia. They probably began as military medals, being bonus payments to mercenaries for a successful campaign.

There is also the issue of "Challenge Coins" (which are actually medals by numismatic definition) which are issued by many entities within the military.

In any case, one would have expected some sort of legend to identify the occasion. More importantly, the Royal Australian Mint would never allow a medallion to be struck on the planchet of a legal tender coin.

Medallions: In RIC, the Rome mint listing has several "medallions and AE1" on pages 120-121, and more on page 125.

Medals are just pieces of metal made to show an image, honor a person or event, or celebrate an idea.

Tokens or medals are special issues from the mint to commemorate a person or event; however they are NOT legal tender. They are frequently produced in bronze or gold.

Indian Peace Medals were produced for the British kings during the colonial period and later by the U.S. mint for each president (at least through the civil war era). They were originally minted to be given to indian tribes as a sign of friendship.

Token
A medal that can be exchanged for goods or services at a particular venue, usually the issuer.
Tongs
A tweezer-like tool with rounded or flattened tips used to handle stamps.

The John Paul medal is marketed as a commemorative, and no claims are made for its value beyond the sentimental.

These are not medallions or other reproductions, but genuine, U.S. legal tender, $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coins minted from 1907 to 1933. Each is certified authentic and graded by PCGS or NGC.
