Menander

Menander is the only Yavana (person of Greek origin in Indian language) king who has become celebrated in ancient Indian literature. He is known as `Milinda' who had his capital at Sakala (modern Sialkot in Pakistan, Euthymedia in Greek).

Menander, circ. B.C. 160-140, is mentioned by Strabo (xi. 11. 1) as having extended his sway as far east as the Isamus (a branch of the Ganges, perhaps beyond the Jumna). AV stater, wt. 130 grs., unin- scribed, obv. Helmeted bust, rev.

Even further east, many rulers of the Indian region also issued coins in the Greek tradition.

He was king and saviour of India, as confirmed by his successors King Apollodotus I and Menander I, who were officially described as BASILEOS SOTHROS "Saviour King" in the bilingual Greek and Kharoshthi legends of their coins.
