Mint Marks
Mint marks are letters that identify where a coin was made. The letter can appear anywhere in the design but usually is placed near the date or in an area near the edge of the coin.

Mint Marks on U.S. Coins
Mint Marks are letter designations found on a coin to tell you from which Mint a coin was manufactured.

Mint marks were first developed to locate a problem. If a coin was underweight, or overweight, the mint mark would immediately tell where the coin was minted, and the problem could be located and fixed.

MINT STATE - (MINT)
A very sharp coin with no wear. The minor details must be present, and be clear and sharp, and the coin's surfaces must look as they did when the coin was first struck.

Another very dramatic mint error is a coin struck on a previously struck coin. An example of this type would be a cent struck on a previously struck dime. Here, we will see elements of each design on the struck coin.

Mint State
This coin grade is nearly perfect. With no trace of wear anywhere. The range of this grade is MS60 to MS70. MS70 is perfect. Most range from MS60-MS66.

Mint Marks: Used to indicate the different branch mint facilities. At times these mints produced rarities because of low production. Well worth searching through your coins to identify.

Mint State (Unc) - Absolutely no trace of wear.
Mint state coins vary from MS-60 to MS-70. As I stated earlier, MS-70 is perfect. No blemishes, good strike, great color, and a lot of other really nit picky stuff.

Mint State (MS) - The term Mint State (MS) can be interchanged with Uncirculated (UNC) to describe "new" coins showing no trace of wear.

Mint Sets - A complete set of circulation strike coins from each mint and each denomination. These were sold by the mint beginning in 1948.
