W mintmark on Mercury Dimes
Question: I have a 1942 mercury dime with a mint mark of "W". Where is that, and why don't I ever see it listed when I read prices of coins?

Mints and Mintmarks
Philadelphia Mint (1792 to date): In 1792 the government acquired a plot of land and several buildings in Philadelphia and set up the first federal facility for the production of coins.

Mintmark: None (for Philadelphia) below the eagle on the reverse
Notes:
Known as the "Little Princess", the 1841 Quarter Eagle remains a coin of mystery.

Mintmarks The mintmark is found below the eagle's tail. Mintmarks include:

In many years Walking Liberty halves were minted in fewer quantities at the branch mints. In those days few are saved in collections resulting in fewer available today, causing higher prices.

Mintmark - Sometimes called a privy mark. Any kind of mark put on a coin when struck to indicate usually the place of striking, the person in charge of striking it, the company responsible or even the die type used.

Overmintmark - Variety in which a Mintmark is overpunched in the die with a different one.

Over-mintmark - One mintmark on top of a different mintmark, such as a 'D' over an 'S' (denoted D/S)
Overdate - A date made by superimposing one more numbers on a previously dated die.

Over Mintmark - Similar to an Overdate, however, the mintmark is stamped twice into the coin (d/d) or another mints hub was passed along creating an over mintmark with two mint marks. Example 1900 O/CC.

This is similar to an Overdate except that the mint mark is stamped twice into the coin (d/d). Another possibility is one mint using another mint's hub which created an over mint mark with two different mint marks.

Mintmarks, or more often, the lack of a mintmark, can be confusing. Until 1980, most coins minted in Philadelphia did not bear a mintmark and U.S. cents produced at that mint still do not.

Mintmark slightly above the halfway point in the field, first C tilted slightly left, and above space between E and N, mainly over N. Second C above right upright of N and partly over the field to the right of that letter.

C - Mintmark used at the Branch Mint in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Cabinet friction - Slight surface wear on a coin, medal or token caused by friction between it and the tray in which it is contained.
CAM - Abbreviation for Cameo.

An over mintmark, similar to an overdate, is one mintmark punched over a different mintmark. The 1950-S/D Washington quarter is a good example. Values can reach several hundred dollars for an otherwise common coin.

The scarcer date/mintmark combinations would be the 1921 (only struck in Philadelphia), the 1927-P and S, the 1928-P, and the 1934-P. None of these particular Peace dollars, however, could be called a true rarity.

D over D Mintmark

The 1846-D/D half eagle is a very popular variety within the Dahlonega series because of the ability to see the D over D mintmark with the naked eye.

While the date and mintmark can easily be determined by a novice and mintages and popularity information can be found with a little research, it takes an experienced numismatist to evaluate a coin as to grade.

IRON COINS WITHOUT MINTMARKS
Schjoth 829-833 are another odd series of iron coin. Since they are also 33 mm, they are probably related to S-824-828. Schjoth lists these as of unclear meaning, but we have a theory about them.

They appear identical, regardless of the date and mintmark of the underlying coin. This is never the case in the real world since different mints produced different qualities of prooflike surface.

For completeness, it includes mintmarks, internet phrases, and a few abbreviations (like UNC). I have been informed that true acronyms are pronouncable, such as MASH, WAC, RADAR, etc.

Often deals with the coin's date or mintmark. However, it can involve changing the appearance (after a coin was minted) such as when hobo nickels were made.

D mint mark - mintmark used to designate that the coin was struck at the US mint in "Denver Colorado". Back between 1838 and the civil war the "D" mint mark was used by the US mint in Dahlonega Georgia.
