modern coin: Traditionally, a coin struck after about A.D. 1500. The term is also used to describe recent U.S. coins as contrasted with older U.S. coins, though no universally accepted definition defines when the modern era of U.S. coinage began.

Modern coins are generally not cleaned because that lessens their value. Ancient coins frequently have dirt and corrosion (patina) products as blemishes. I generally ask two questions when dealing with each coin.

Modern coins have dates on them. In the west, we use a Christian calendar, dated from the probable birth of Jesus. Islamic countries count years from the Heigira of Mohammed.

Modern coins are struck at such a high rate of speed that the human eye can barely perceive it. The fastest of the new coin presses can strike nearly ten coins per second! ...

Modern coins often feature a letter or a combination of letters to identify the mint where the coin was struck. Maria Theresia Talers, however, use a combination of letters to identify the official(s) responsible for a particular strike.

Modern coining methods have vastly reduced the frequency of these varieties due to the use of a single squeeze hubbing method during die creation, but doubled dies in modern United States coinage are still occurring.

Of modern coins, the clad US quarter dollar is an example of a coin which is not a fourrée, it is made of two layers of copper nickel, with copper sandwich in between and therefore is not a plated coin.

With modern coins there are two types of the orientation of the reverse:
'Coin' orientation, where the reverse is upside down when you turn the coin sideways.
'Medal' orientation, where the reverse is upright when you turn the coin sideways.

With the availability of new, modern coin presses, the Mint could produce large silver coins with strikes much bolder than previously possible. This opened the way for new and more impressive designs.

Grading ancient coins is different from grading modern coins, all struck alike on automatic machines.

This innovative technique was quite daring, for no other modern coins had ever used it. In normal times, in fact, the idea might well have been scrapped.

Numerical grading seems to work quite well for modern coins (to pick a number, let's say pieces minted during the last three centuries or so), but is, in my opinion, inadequate for coins not produced by modern methods.

For modern coins, you'll need to know the date and the mint mark, if one is present. If you can't make out the date, or if the coin is so stained or dirty that you can't tell what it is, try looking at it with a magnifying glass.

The Washington Quarter is the second longest running series in modern coinage behind only the Lincoln Cent. Up until 1964, it was minted out of silver and copper.

The Sheldon Scale 70-point system has become the standard coin grading system for modern coins. We are not coin grading experts and use the simpler American Numismatic Association grading standards that recognizes 11 grades for circulated coins.
