Morgan dollars were struck in a variety of U.S. mints. They were struck in Philadelphia (no mintmark), New Orleans (O mintmark), San Francisco (S mintmark), and Carson City (CC mintmark).
Morgan's obverse features a left-facing portrait of Miss Liberty. The reverse depicts a somewhat scrawny eagle which led some to vilify the coin as a "buzzard dollar." The designer's initial M appears on both sides-a first.

The Morgan Dollar is one of the most collected silver coins in our history. But it didn't start out that way. Until the 1960s, it was largely ignored by the public.
The Morgan silver dollar is today one of the most popular of all collector coins. First minted in 1878 following the passage of the Bland-Alison Act, the new dollar was named after its designer, George T. Morgan.
The Morgan Silver Dollar was minted from 1878 to 1904 and again for one more year in 1921. The Morgan Dollar is named after its designer, George T. Morgan.
