Morgan dollars were struck in a variety of U.S. mints. They were struck in Philadelphia (no mintmark), New Orleans (O mintmark), San Francisco (S mintmark), and Carson City (CC mintmark).

Rare Morgan Dollars
Morgan dollars are silver dollars of US origin. You can find the first minted pieces from 1878. The Morgan Dollars which are the rarest of the entire series include the 1889-CC, the 1893-S, and the 1895 Proof.
Morgan Dollars and Walking Liberty Halves are more popular than Peace Dollars and Standing Liberty Quarters. Buffalo Nickels are more popular than Mercury Dimes, but not by much.

What Barber did was to modify the large head used on the Morgan dollar by adding a Liberty cap and cropping Liberty's hair shorter in back. He then placed his initial B on the truncation of the neck.
Solid collector coins (Such as VF coins from the 1700-1800s other than Morgan dollars) do retain their value quite well, and gain a bit of value hedging against inflation. Date rarity is more important than condition rarity to maintaining value.

A coin which has already been attributed by denomination, date, mintmark and major variety (such as Morgan Dollar, 1879-S, Reverse of '78) can often still be broken down by die variety.
Just take a look at some of the jumps certain Morgan dollars make between MS-63 and MS-64. For example the 1889-CC in Coin World trends shows $12,000 for an MS-63 vs $30,000 for an MS-64.
For instance, in the Morgan dollar series there are certain issues, such as the1892-O and 1893-CC, which often come weakly, struck. This striking weakness show sup above Liberty's ear and has often been confused by the novice as being wear.

Very good examples of soft struck coins are certain Morgan dollars from the New Orleans Mint. In order to prolong the life of the coin dies, the pressure of striking the coins was reduced. This produced coins with rounded shallow detail.
