MS-61 This is for "Mint State" (the grade) and "61" (the numerical designation of that grade). This grade meets the minimum requirements of Mint State plus includes some virtues not found on MS60 coins.

 


23 1855 MS-61. Lustrous light yellow gold with minor surface marks. Typical strike with strong details except for central obverse and reverse with digit 8 weak.

An MS-61 coin will be similar in quality to an MS-60 except that it will show fewer marks and/or hairlines. In addition, a coin graded MS-61 will probably have better color and luster than an MS-60. Some will show below average strikes.

This translates to one graded MS-61 with none higher. Whoa! Wait! How can this be? Two in one issue yet a population of only one. Upon reading the second dealer's ad further I had my answer as he states "Populations are PCGS only".

A coin with four or less marks of this size would be graded MS-61 or better. By comparison to the system we now use to grade coins such as silver dollars and larger denominations the new grading system would be seen as quite conservative.

Higher-grade coins are labeled MS-61 up to MS-70. Coins showing wear are graded below MS-60 and fall into grades from AU down to G, with G being a coin showing great wear and AU being a coin showing little wear.

The "MS" stands for Mint State. In between,there are grades MS-61,MS-62,MS-63 and so on,all the way up to MS-70--a perfect coin. Each step up the grading scale indicates an improvement in quality.

Grades from MS-61 to MS-64 cover intermediate parts of this range. Truly exceptional coins may be graded MS-66, MS-67 or, if absolutely flawless, as high as the theoretical maximum of MS-70.
