Several prominent mule errors have been discovered in recent times. One of the most famous is the Sacagawea Dollar/ Washington State Quarter mule featuring the obverse of a Statehood quarter and the reverse of a Sacagawea dollar.

One of the very few known examples of the H16C mule.

Total mintage of the 2000 $1 / 10c mule is a matter of some conjecture. However, a number of the more prolific mule hunters shared their find statistics on the now defunct Aussie Coins internet forum.

Mule
A 'mule' is a coin which has two mismatched sides - the term is also used to a coin with the wrong edge inscription. Typically a mule occurs when the mint accidentally selects the wrong die for one side of a coin.

mule: A coin, token, medal or note whose obverse/face is not matched with its official or regular reverse/back.

mule: an unintended pairing of two dies.
multiple-struck: a coin that was struck more than once.
mutilated: a severely damaged coin.

Mule Error
This is a rare Mint error where the obverse die is of one coin and the reverse die is of another coin.

A mule occurs when a coin is produced with mismatched dies. In some countries, the Mints use dies for different denominations with the same dimensions. In these instances, mules have been known to exist and are not that rare.

Another mule of which only two have been discovered is a Lincoln cent planchet and obverse/Roosevelt dime reverse. One is dated 1995, the other 1999.

A Fourree Mule
Anyone who has been following this series of Featured Coins certainly knows that I find interest in coins in less than perfect states of preservation. This week's coin is even uglier than usual but shows a few points of interest.

This is a mule consisting of the obverse of an Irish halfpenny obverse and the reverse from the 1795 Liberty and Security halfpenny token, minted by William Lutwyche in Birmingham.

From Medals of the United States Assay Commission 1860-1977: "This mule used, by accident, a 1932 Assay obverse (AC-76b) and the reverse from the 1931 Assay medal. Discovered by John Jay Pittman, for a long time his was the only example known.

Another is called a "mule." In the past, especially the late 1700s and early 1800s, mint workers would sometimes put sets of dies together from "different" coins and make a few novelty strikes for themselves.

A "Mule" or some other sort of error? Quite frankly, we are not ready to refer to it as a mule since a mule is defined as a coin struck from two dies not intended to be paired together. We don't even think it can be called an error! ...

This is a rare mule of the old type obverse and new type reverse. As a result there is no date on the coin. A short run with this incorrect obverse die meant that a small quantity of these coins has entered circulation.
