Beginning in 1861-2 there was strong agitation to set up a National Banking system.

The Saudi Riyal introduced in 1970 is a modern currency that for the first time was issued in national bank notes. In 1972, the Riyal, still broken into 1000 Baisas was rebaptized Oman Rial.

1865: A national bank note with "The Battle of Lexington" and "Columbia Leading a Procession" on either side of the face and obligation text conspicuously in the middle. The reverse features "The Baptism of Pocahontas" in black, and a green border.

Over 300,000 certified proofs for the printing of United States national bank notes (Figure 52), gold certificates, Treasury certificates, legal tender notes, and many other types were added to our collection.

National bank notes were produced in a variety of types. Many people begin collections by obtaining a few notes from their home state. Others may attempt to collect one specific type of note from a bank in each state that issued them.

A good friend of mine, who has a superb collection of Minnesota national bank notes, recently exhibited his collection at a major coin convention.

If you live in a state in which many varieties of national bank notes were once issued, you might try to acquire notes from as many different banks as possible.

The 5 Cent Fractional Postage Currency is from 1862-1863 by the National Bank Note Company of New York when banks suspended specie payments. This note depicts Thomas Jefferson.

One useful contact would be the International Bank Note Society's journal and webpage which offer not only contact information for trades and auctions, but also let's you preview images of old currency on their website.

The CIA World Factbook, shows 178 different currencies in use, but on February 28, 2002 the European national bank notes and coins were withdrawn from circulation in favor of the Euro -- adding 1 currency while eliminating 12.

The state bank notes are taxed out of existence and replaced by the national bank notes which are of uniform design, apart from the name of the particular bank.
