Nickel Three-Cent Pieces (1865-1889)
In the United States series, nickel three-cent pieces, minted from 1865 through 1889, are unusual inasmuch as only one design was produced over a relatively long span of years.

Refers to Jefferson nickels that were minted between 1942-1945. During WWII, nickel and copper were designated as critical strategic metals. It was during this time that the U.S.
Hobo nickel - An Indian Head (Buffalo) nickel which has been engraved with the portrait of a hobo or other character, often by a hobo.
Rays Nickel The first five-cent pieces, issued in 1866 and 1867, had rays interspersed between the 13 stars on the reverse. Early die wear and breakage led the mint to delete these rays on the remaining coins of 1867-1883.

Cupro-nickel - A mixture of Copper and nickel used to make many current coins including all the silver coloured current British coins (5p, 10p, 20p, 50p). First used in Great Britain after the use of silver was completely stopped in 1947.
Cupro-nickel - An alloy of copper and nickel. Today the usual ratio is 75% copper to 25% nickel.
wooden nickels: Originally, substitute for coins first used in the 1931 to 1935 depression, having originated in Tenino, Wash. Issued in round or rectangular form and in many denominations. Currently used for advertising and souvenir purposes.
Copper-Nickel Cent - Cents issued from 1856 through 1864 in the copper-nickel alloy. These were called white cents during the period because of their pale color compared to the earlier red cents made of pure copper.

The term "nickel free" can be confusing, because items marked nickel free are allowed to contain a very small amount of nickel. There is not yet a U.S. standard.
Nickel Coins
The only major difference between nickel coins and other coins is that spots are slightly more detracting on nickel than on silver or gold but less detracting than they are on copper coins.
Nickel three-cent pieces had a slightly longer mint run of 25 years, from 1865 to 1889, though a few of those years saw only proofs produced.
Nickel-brass three pence coins were demonetised on 31st August 1971.

Ni - nickel metal, when used in this work will be synonymous with cupro-nickel, usually 25% Ni, more or less and 75% Cu, more or less. If Ni intended to refer to pure Ni it will be designated "pure Ni.".
Later nickel and copper coins disappeared into the cauldrons of war, further tightening the shortage. Some large cities hoarded coins for unknown and unforeseen contingencies.
In 1917, postmen were accepting as 5.30 mark, coins totaling five mark.
