Nickel brass

Numismatic NickelNickel silver

Inner: Nickel brass
Outer: Cupronickel
Varies between national issues. Most are finely ribbed with edge lettering.

A two pound coin in the same nickel brass alloy as the pound coin (thought to be 70% copper, 24½% zinc and 5½% nickel) was first introduced in 1986 as a commemorative coin, although it was legal tender and was accepted by shops.

The coin is dodecagonal having twelve sides, and was the first coin of its shape, and also the first coin to be struck in nickel brass.
The design on the reverse of the coin is a thrift plant, commonly called a sea pink.

These denominations have been issued practically every year since then (the silver denominations now being struck in nickel brass) until the reign of Elizabeth II when the Gold Coast, Sierra Leone and Nigeria received their independence.

That term was also used for threepenny bits from 1937 when they were no longer small silver coins but were reissued in a yellowy nickel brass metal with 12 sides.
