Obol
A small silver (and occasionally a larger bronze) coin of ancient Greece; there were 12 chalkoi to an obol and 6 obols to a drachm.

obol - the smallest Greek silver denonimation, six of which equal a drachm (q.v.).
obryzum - the technical term for pure gold in Greek and Latin.

Silver obol of the Greco-Bactrian king Demetrius. Extremely small (12 millimeters in diameter), but beautifully crafted.

Another obol, this from Kelenderis in Cilicia, dates to the mid 4th century BC. Using the goat with head turned back seen on larger coins of this city and abbreviating the city name makes identification easy.

The common division was the obol or obolo (1/2) (mealha in Portugal) and the multiple (4) was the gros in France, croat in Spain, the grosso in Italy, the groat in England, and the groschen in Germany, Bohemia and Poland.

The denominations in use at this time are listed below together with their relative values: some denominations do not occur in all standards, the fractions of the obol in particular only occurring at Athens.
