Obsolete and Unusual Coinage of the 19th Century
The 19th century in the United States was a period of great change and experimentation in the U.S. coinage System. Many different kinds of coins were tried out.

 


United States of America - Obsolete Currency
The standard reference for this material is the four volume set, "Standard Catalog of United States Obsolete Bank Notes, 1782-1866", by James Haxby, published by Krause Publications in 1988.

Paisa - Plural paise. Also pice. An aluminum coin and monetary unit, the 100th part of the rupee of India, Nepal and Pakistan. Another name for the poisha.

Pengo
An obsolete currency unit of Hungary. The collapse of the pengo after WWII produced the world's worst ever hyperinflation, with the pengo falling to below one-septillionth of a US dollar. It was replaced by the forint.

Generally, a term to describe coins with a finely pitted surface, however, recent discoveries of coins that have been exposed to saltwater for over a hundred years has made this term inaccurate, if not obsolete.

obsolete - a coin design or coins series that is no longer being produced. obverse - the front side of a coin. Usually the obverse side of a coin has the main design, date (year of issue), and sometimes a mintmark.

Obsolete bank notes covered are Union Bank of TN at Chattanooga, Bank of East TN at Chattanooga, Bank of Chattanooga. A census of the obsolete bank notes is used to project new rarity numbers for some issues.

Three of the seven silver coin denominations are now obsolete: the three cent, half dime and twenty cent. The three-cent coin was the smallest silver coin ever minted by the U.S.

Collector demand is pushing values for these old copper coins higher. The obsolete Half Cent, is always in short supply, and the popular American Large Cent is gaining value steadily.

In 1982 it was considered that the word NEW was now obsolete, and the reverse legend changed to HALF PENNY.
