The 1942-D overdate will have the "2" in "1942" almost completely over the "1" and the "D" mintmark will have been repunched, that is stamped over a "D" that was placed in the wrong position.

Among numerous overdates and varieties, one in particular stands out: 1817 with 15 stars on the obverse.

The only highly recognized error in the series is the 1918/17 overdate. This coin in FH Mint State condition exceeds the prices of the 1916 coin. (in MS-65 FH the 1916 lists for $35,000 while the 1918/17 lists for $300,000).
The resulting 1918/7-D overdate is a rare and sought-after coin. Also, in 1937 excessive polishing of a Denver mint die removed most of the right foreleg, leading to the famous "three legged" variety.

The obverse has the portrait facing right with CAROLVS II DEI GRATIA around, and like the reverse has only one type. There are four overdates in this series. They are 1675/4, 1676/5, 1678/7 and 1682/1.
Overdates and overmintmarks are not considered errors since they were done intentionally. Other die-cutting 'mistakes' are considered errors. Double dies, planchet clips, and off-metal strikings are also considered errors.

There are no major varieties within the series however, there are a few changes in mintmark sizes in 1917, 1928, 1934, 1941, 1942 and 1945; mintmark position; and a couple of overdates in the 1942/1 and the 1942/1-D.
There are also two overdate varieties which if included in the set would also rank as keys. They are the 1942/1 and the 1942/1 D. The 1945 S dime also has a "micro S" variety that is popular with collectors.

The result may be called an overdate error, where one numeral is stamped over another. Generations ago, US mint employees used logo punches to punch the numerals into a coin die. This also explains why the gap between numerals varies on older coins.
