Papia

Numismatic PaoloPapiria

----On a quinarius of the Papia family appears the head of Mercury, and a lyre on the reverse, an association which corroborates the pretensions made for him by Horace and other poets, to be considered as the inventor of that instrument.

RSC Papia-1. Obverse: Head of Juno Sospita right wearing a goat's skin. There is a symbol behind the head that appears to be the base of a column. Reverse: Gryphon prancing right with the top of a column below the chest, and "L PAPI" below. 18.

Note: The worship of Juno Sospita was introduced into Rome from Lanuvium, the birthplace of the Papia gens. She was the protecting genius of women, accompanying them through life from birth to death.
