Patina is the oxidized metal that coats many ancient bronze and copper coins. It is usually green, but can be many colors including blue and red.

Patinations are the natural surface coatings that occur on ancient coins over time.

This article will show you how to patina pennies. Also called natural toning, patina is the change metal undergoes under the chemical influences of air, water and earth. Here, we artificially induce a chemical change.

Originally meant as a green or brown surface film frequently found on ancient copper and bronze coins and caused by oxidation over a long period of time. Also influenced by moisture and certain soils.

The colour "absorbed" by the coin because of surroundings factors: the ground-type, contact with other metals or with sea-water, minerals, etc.

Patina can be combined with hard earth deposits that produce an attractive contrast. This is similar to (and generally prefered to) the effect produced by patina wearing away from the high points of the coin.

It only follows that in some cases, when heavy toning or patination is applied, coins that have had their holes or test cuts filled have gone undetected.

Pale greenish yellow gold with traces of orange patina. Moderately abraded and hairlined surfaces, not at all unusual for Charlotte and Dahlonega gold dollars. Strike very typical of this design, with the digit 8 weak.

When viewing a coin that was once bright and shiny that is now beginning to age gracefully as a darkening patina begins to form, please do not panic.

Ancient coins frequently have dirt and corrosion (patina) products as blemishes. I generally ask two questions when dealing with each coin. Will cleaning be likely to make the coin more readable?

On the other hand, a nice patina can be artificially applied - and then be called "lovely old cabinet toning." It is quite a dilemma. I learned just to buy the coins I liked and to shrug off all the other concerns.

Original red, mint luster is seldom seen, but natural patinas are very important in determining the coins' value, since copper can take on beautiful and stable surface colorations over the years.

Gold coins, if they do tone, usually do so in various shades of red while some ancient copper coins, particularly Roman sestertii, take on a lovely green patina.

As the coins are handled frequently, the darker "patina" may wear off the high points of the coin, leaving golden-colored highlights that accent the darker background around the border, lettering and other less exposed areas.

Reportedly, dealers will take rare coins to these factories where they are reproduced, with the correct metal composition, patination color and type of soil adhesion proper to that dynasty and type.
