A pattern coin is a coin produced for the purpose of evaluating a proposed coin design, but which was not approved for general circulation. Generally, these coins are of interest only to collectors of pattern coins.

PATTERN COINS, DIE TRIALS & FANTASIES
From time to time, the United States Mint considers implementing new designs on the coins in circulation. Historically, the Mint developed new designs either internally or through outside competitions.

pattern: Coin-like pieces designed to test proposed coin designs, mottoes or denominations proposed for adoption as a regular issue, struck in the metal to be issued for circulation and that were not adopted, at least in year of pattern issue.

United States Pattern Coinage: A Short Chronology
Produced sporadically since the Mint's earliest days, patterns drew little attention from anyone outside the Philadelphia facility until 1836, when the Gobrecht dollars first appeared.

A gem example of this enigmatic pattern. It is just like the regular Copper-Nickel issue, but on a thin planchet. This is a R7 pattern and is quite unusual.

Pattern Coins
Patterns, it has been said, are what might have been in coinage but weren't.

pattern: a coin that tests a design to see how it appears in coin form and to determine if it strikes up properly. By definition, a pattern is a design type that was never accepted for regular use.

pattern - A coin that was struck as an experiment or as a trial piece. Usually, a new design or made of experimental metal alloys. Still considered government property, resent U.S. Pattern coins are illegal to own.

Pattern - A coin that proposed either by someone at the mint or other that is actually produced as a coin, but never adopted for general use.

This term when used in coin collecting describes a prototype of a proposed coin design.

Pattern
A coin struck and submitted to the coin issuing authority as a proposed issue. Technically, examples with adopted designs are patterns, but often, only those with designs which are not adopted can be identified as patterns.

Pattern - A proposed design for a new coin. When a new coin is going to be issued a number of engravers will be asked to submit their designs, before the final design is chosen.

PATTERN
A design suggested for a new coinage, struck in a few examples but not adopted. The Nova Scotia cents of 1862 with the large bust and the wreath of roses are patterns.

Patterns - A pattern is essentially the result of a mint test. The mint has made coins as part of testing equipment, different metals and sometimes as approval pieces.

Pattern half dollars and eagles dated 1861 and 1862 have the words GOD OUR TRUST. From 1863 through 1865, additional patterns were made using GOD OUR TRUST, GOD AND OUR COUNTRY, and IN GOD WE TRUST.

Pattern - A coin struck as a trial or experimental piece, typically for a new design, denomination or metal. Many times pattern coins are struck without all final legends, dates, design details, etc.

Pattern Stella, 1879
This is a gilt aluminum trial piece for a Stella, or 4-dollar "goloid" coin (a combination of 6g gold, 3g silver, and 1g copper). The coin was intended to help international trade.

Pattern: A sample coin that could be used for circulation.
Planchet: A blank piece of metal used to receive a coin stamp.
Premium Value: The price paid for a coin beyond it's face value.

Patterns similar to the new bridge designs but with no inscription of value were made available to the public. In addition, silver proofs and some silver piedfort proofs were issued by the Royal Mint.

A pattern for a five-pound piece was produced during the reign of George IV but the design was never adopted. Two-pound pieces were, however, issued together with sovereigns and half sovereigns.

Mint pattern:
We really don't know much about what happened inside ancient mints, so the process of how they determined new coins is still very much a mystery. Perhaps this coin is an example of a pattern coin, much like the US 1856 Flying Eagle Cent?

Many pattern enthusiasts have always wanted a hub trial or a die trial piece to go along with the specific type or denomination of pattern(s) that they collect. A new demand has emerged for hub trials, die trials and splashers.

Die Use Patterns
All ancient mints did not follow the same rules in the way dies were paired and replaced. Most simple was a system using dies paired for life.

The swan pattern dollar is not an official issue, although it does hold an important part in Australia's numismatic history. It has been nicknamed the "Goose dollar" by collectors and has risen in popularity in the past few years.

There are pattern Halfpence likewise of this sovereign of seven different varieties, but none struck for common currency. The following is a description of those in the British Museum.

Term for trial, pattern, and experimental strikings. The anglicized version is essay and literally means a test or trial.

A feature at the lower part of a coin, usually set off by a horizontal bar that displays the date or denomination.
