PCGS Declares Three Morgans Counterfeits
I received two press releases today from PCGS. The first is a short summary of the issue, while the second provides some very interesting details about the minting process of the counterfeit Morgan dollars.

 


PCGS, a subsidiary of Collectors Universe, started grading coins for the public in 1986 and since then PCGS has graded millions and millions of coins. So why buy PCGS coins? Let's answer that question now.

Definition: PCGS stands for "Professional Coin Grading Service." PCGS is one of the two widely-recognized "top tier" grading services, the other being NGC.

The set is listed by PCGS as "the number one finest set of all time" of Indian Head $10 denomination circulation strikes. The set's weighted grade point average is 65.73 compared to a possible highest average of 66.52 of all finest known specimens.

PCGS Secure Plus Slab
Different to the Secure Plus Service, coins submitted under a higher service level -those coins with a high value and a quick PCGS turnaround will be given a plus grading if they meet certain grading criteria.

The first was a set of MS-63 dollars, hand-picked, in PCGS slabs for about $12,000, and the second was a set of MS-65 coins, again in PCGS slabs, for $200,000, except that the seller was missing four pieces from the second set, ...

For example a coin might be described as PCGS MS69 (meaning certified by PCGS as being in Mint State, numerical designation 69) or NGC PF70 (meaning certified by NGC as Proof state, numerical designation 70).

PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service.
Proof (PR) - A specially made coin distinguished by sharpness of detail and usually with a brilliant mirrorlike surfaces. Proof refers to the method of manufacture and is not a condition.

Just because PCGS or NGC calls it a Proof does not mean absolutely for certain that it is. I have seen a number of coins that these services have called Proof that I do not agree with.

In the December 14th, 1998 issue of Coin World the very rare Adams 1804 Draped Bust $1 demonstrates the following: "When the coin was sold in 1993 the coin was in a PCGS Proof 45 holder.
