The penny is amongst the earliest of British coins, being first minted in the 8th century AD. A denier had been struck in the kingdom of the Franks about 755 AD, and the Kings of Kent (Heaberht) and Mercia (Offa) followed suit soon after.

The 1943 Copper Penny
The most notable and probably the most talked about coin in the history of collecting is the 1943 Copper Penny.

If the penny sticks to a magnet, it is not the rare 1943 copper penny.
Also beware of pennies that have had their year markings altered. Pennies from 1945, 1948, and 1949 can be modified to appear as if they are from 1943.

Marc Antony's coins are also a possibility for the "tribute penny." While not a "Caesar", Antony defintely had imperial aspirations. Unlike Brutus, he was not a republican, but an opportunist.

Brenner, has been on the penny since 1909 which was the 100th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. The Lincoln cent was the first U.S. circulating coin to bear a president's image.

By the time of Anastasius, the denarius was long gone. When Charlemagne, however, retrenched Frankish coinage on the basis of silver, he revived the name for his standard coin, which was supposed to be a twelfth of a solidus.

Penny - The denomination is from Denarius, a Roman coin, which then became a denier in Europe and penny here which is abbreviated as `d'.

The penny and its divisions had been important elements of the British coinage system for centuries when the adoption of a decimal system in 1971 replaced the old penny valued at 1/240 of a pound with one valued at 100 to the pound.

The penny token of the Birmingham workhouse illustrates this point. Issued in 1812 and 1813, the workhouse depicted on the obverse was at the time one of only two public buildings in the entire city, the other one being the prison.

Indian penny
Slang for an Indian Head cent.
Intrinsic value
The value of the metal(s) contained in a numismatic item. The United States issues contained their intrinsic value in metal until 1933 for gold coins and 1964 for silver coins.

Lincoln penny Slang for Lincoln Head cent.
liner A coin that is on the cusp between two different grades. A 4/5 liner is a coin that is either a high-end MS/PR-64 or a minimum-standard MS/PR-65. See also high end premium quality.

The "tribute penny" is considered to be a denarius of Tiberius, the Roman emperor of the time. The "widow's mite" is the smallest bronze coin in circulation, the lepton. The shekel, for the Temple tax,  is considered to be a contemporary coin of Tyre.

Cartwheel (1) Another name for any silver dollar, (2) a term used to describe the coruscating luster often seen on a Blazer Uncirculated coin, (3) England's hefty 1797 copper twopenny coin.

Sheldon listed, updated in 1958 with Walter Breen and Dorothy Paschal also listed as authors with the new name, Penny Whimsy.

I have an Indian cent that looks pretty excellent to me -- what is its condition in collectors' terms?

The pound was represented, as it still is, by a £ sign, the shilling by a 's' and the penny by a 'd' (for 'denarius', a Roman silver coin which was also used as the name for the English silver penny).

The Anglo-Saxon prototype for this type of penny can now be dated to ca. 991 - 997 AD. Moreover, one of the three Onlaf- pennies is found in a large coin-hoard from Ågelösa near Lund in Skåne (Sweden).

I keep seeing questions, mainly from our American friends, about the common names of British coins, or about the £, s., or d. in "£.s.d." ...

American coins are most often graded these days on a 70 point scale devised by Dr William Shelby for his famous work, "Penny Whimsy" on early large cents. 0 means that you can pretty much tell that it was once a coin while 70 means that it is perfect.

(I was once offered an English hammered penny that was absolutely as struck, however the striking was so blundered one could only guess at the attribution.) The opposite is also possible.

William Sheldon, author of the book Penny Whimsy, knew well the appeal of natural toning on his beloved early cents, and he captured its allure in words: "Old copper, like beauty, ...

The denarius is the origin of the symbol, d, for the old British penny, to which it deteriorated as a result of inflation. On today's ancient coin market an ordinary denarius still costs about a day's pay.

Almost all had face values of a Farthing, Halfpenny and Penny and were issued because small change was very hard to come by at the time. Conder was the name of the man who first catalogued this large array of token issues.
