The pfennig is a small coin and the minor unit of the German currency. Its value was 1/100 of a German mark and other German currencies with the name mark.

Pfennig
The German equivalent to the English word "penny". Like the English penny, the pfennig was a silver coin in mediaeval times. In the predecimal currencies of the German states, the pfennig was a small copper or billon coin.

PFENNIG (Pfening). The silver coin, called also as denarius in Medieval in different countries. P. was struck since the 8th century and was actually the only coin in Europe until groschen appeared in the 13th century. (1 P. = 1/12 groschen). P.

During the medieval period, from roughly 1200 to 1300, the central European states struck a most unusual coin, a thin uniface piece in silver, today called "bracteates" (they called them pfennigs, as they did two-faced coins).

In common with other European countries during the tenth and eleventh centuries the coins struck in Germany were mainly of one denomination, the denar or pfennig as it later came to be called.

In German money there are 100 Pfennigs in a Deutschemark and it is thought that 'Pfennig' might come from 'Pfanne', the German for 'pan'.

Pennies have been minted in Great Britain since the eighth century, although similar coins such as the pfennig, denier, dinar, and dinero have been minted in many places throughout the world.
