Pile - The die at the bottom of the coin when the coin is hammered. Usually it was pointed so it would stay located.
Pitting - Small holes in the surface of a coin or die, often caused by a damaged die or even blank.

Pile - The lower die in the pair of dies used to strike hammered coins. It usually had a sharp pointed end which could be stuck into the wood to hold it in place.

Pile-ups (brockages) can cause the center of the coin dies to "sink". When the dies sink it is like adding extra relief to fill in. Imagine a set of coin dies. the fields are flat (not domed). Each coin die has an image depth of say .005".

If you put one each of every different type of paper money that has ever been produced around the world in a neat pile it might not reach two miles into the air but it would certainly be very tall.

As kids, we spent hours together huddled over a pile of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters looking for old coins to complete our collections. We excitedly filled blue coin books with our finds.

The reverse with Roma on a pile of arms was minted for all coins denomitations under Trajan. However when you enlarge a coin 8x, what looked like superb detail often turns into a cartoon-like image.

During a recent visit to Nepal, I found the copper coin, illustrated below, in a pile of unidentified junk.

Was there a 1909 S VDB hidden in that pile of pennies from grandma? From then on, I always made it a habit to look at my change. This was back in 1976. It was still possible to find wheat cents and silver in circulation.

Many dealers will look at a pile of walking liberty half dollars, look at a few and state that they are worth silver melt value, despite the fact that a rare date and mint mark or variety may be lurking somewhere in the bag.
