Pitting - Small holes in the surface of a coin or die, often caused by a damaged die or even blank.

corrosion: pitting or green oxidation that appears on the surfaces of coins. Light corrosion is called "porosity," moderate corrosion is called "granularity," and heavy corrosion is called "pitting."

The sand, not the saltwater, likely does the pitting on gold and silver coins in the ocean. A better term for these coins would be sandblasted Uncs or sand-damaged Uncs.

At its worst, it can be a simple layer of paint which can be hiding heavy pitting or other problems.

The present example is somewhat more off center than usual and shows some pitting on the reverse. Also, it was struck before the die break developed on the reverse.

These accumulations may cause pitting and corrosion to the surface of the copper coin. The corroded portions should be removed properly without making any scratches.
There are products available that are made especially for coin cleaning.

For cleaning corroded coins the damage is already done, they will forever show pitting into the coin surface. This is as far as anyone should go with cleaning. Never rub your coins, this will scratch the surface.

Coins with scratches, holes, very dark toning, pitting, corrosion, fake color, retooling, repairs and other problems are severely downgraded.

Generally experienced numismatists agree that a coin should not be cleaned unless there are spots of oxidation, pitting which might worsen with time, or unsightly streaking or discolouration that will make the coin generally unappealing.

It might be noted that the post-1982 pennies are much more susceptible to corrosion and pitting than those made prior to 1982.
