Plated Coins in Greek and Roman Times
As soon as coinage was invented fake coins came into being. It is also true that from about 250 AD to 350 AD, the use of "counterfeit" coins was part of state policy.
plated: a coin to which an extra layer of metal was applied chemically or electronically (usually gold or silver).
platinum: a precious metal used primarily in bullion coins.
plated A term used to describe a coin to which a thin layer of metal has been applied-for example, gold-plated copper strikings of certain U.S. pattern coins.

The copper-plated steel twopence are lower in density than the bronze twopence, and so are slightly thicker as the weight remained the same - a fact that becomes very evident if you compare piles of 10 coins of each type.
Beware of silver-plated commemorative medallions such as WTC and other commemoratives issued by merchants. Silver clad is not the same as silver plating.

Beware of "copper plated" 1943 steel pennies. If the penny sticks to a magnet, it is not the rare 1943 copper penny.
Also beware of pennies that have had their year markings altered.

The 1864 No L Proof is very scarce, with an estimated 300 examples struck. This coin is the unique PR-4 die pair plated in the book. It has interesting die pits on the face (mounds on the coin) and a doubled die reverse.
These coins look real to an untrained eye, but are not gold and are instead gold plated brass, and are lighter than the real thing.
