The end of WWII witnessed the recentralization of monetary power in the hands of a United States that had become willing to carry the burden of postwar reconstruction.

 


Though no cents are dated 1815, the first postwar shipment of Boulton planchets was received, struck, and distributed in late 1815. These coins bear an 1816 date and contain the ugliest head of the entire series.

By interesting coincidence, Morgan dollar production resumed on the very same day-May 9, 1921-that legislation was introduced in Congress calling for the issuance of a new silver dollar marking the postwar peace.

Three-dollar gold issues of the Civil War and postwar years are recognized for their rarity, a result of very low mintages. In the case of 1862, just 5,750 circulation strikes were produced. Diagonal field striations are visible, as issued.
