Proof Sets
All of today's annual U.S. Mint Proof Sets are struck at the San Francisco Mint. These issues are only made available to coin collectors and are not released into circulation.
Proof Sets have been issued every year since 1971, which means that all denominations can be obtained in Proof except for 5p, 10p and 50p coins dated prior to 1971.
King of Siam Proof Set Gallery
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation has graded and encapsulated the rare and historic set of United States proof coins presented to the King of Siam in 1836.
Available now are proof sets of the five state quarters that will be released this year -- Nevada, Nebraska, Colorado, North Dakota and South Dakota. The proof set is $15.95 and the silver proof set is $23.95.
Also available in proof sets are American Silver Eagle Coins. Silver American Eagles are minted by the US Mint and are guaranteed to contain one full ounce of silver.

PVC - Poly Vinyl Chloride (or PolyVinyl-Chorine). PVC is sometimes used in the manufacturing of plastic to add a flexibility or softness to it. Warning: Do NOT Use Coin holders containing PVC.
Proof set production was resumed in 1950, at which time coins could be ordered only as sets of five pieces. From 1950 through 1964 coinage was continuous, after which time a nationwide coin shortage forced the Mint to stop the service to collectors.

Proof sets are very different because the coins are not "business strikes"; they are specially prepared and made. The dies that stamp the coins are polished to a mirror finish.
Proof sets prior to 1955 came packaged in "boxes" with coins in degradable plastic pouches (cellulosic?). They all should be re-housed in suitable flips or Lucite.

Modern proof sets starting in 1968 are minted in San Francisco. All coins of the set are given an "S" mintmark, or at least they are supposed to have a mintmark. In rare instances the mintmark is absent from some coins, most notably the dimes.

The 1oz Britannia Silver Coins were first introduced in 1997 when a silver proof set was minted. They are made from one ounce of Britannia Silver which has a millesimal fineness of 958/100 (95.8%) with the remaining been made from copper.
