Proofs
The Barber series has a proof coin for each regular year of production, although only a few thousand or less were produced for each year. In MS-65 condition, each coin will cost $3000 or more to obtain.

Proofs
Proofs were minted of each of the Philadelphia Mint dates in the Type III series, with those struck from 1884 through 1889 being produced in relatively large quantities.

Proofs and Specimen Strikes - These coins were produced especially for collectors. Usually, they are struck twice to bring out the full design in great detail.

NEW-DIE PROOFS
First coins struck of working dies. Not proofs. See also First Strike.

Proofs were coined at the Philadelphia Mint beginning in 1950, and this date through 1955 are all worth more than subsequent proofs. Coinage of proofs was suspended with the adoption of copper-nickel clad dimes in 1965.

Proofs of the series are excessively rare, with perhaps two known of the 1850 and 1854. Proofs were first placed on public sale in 1858, and three or four exist with this historic date.

Proofs of the earlier years, 1865 through 1876, are considerably scarcer than those of the later period.

Proofs come with high relief details (as seen on the 1921's) and normal relief details. The normal relief Proofs are extremely rare.

Proofs of the modern era are made on specially prepared and polished blanks and are struck at least twice by carefully selected dies under slow, heavy pressure. The coins are handled carefully one at time so that no nicks or scratches mar the surface.

Proofs are now being listed even if there is an equivalent circulation issue, as each list is updated.

Proofs
Very few Matte Proof Peace Dollars with high relief were minted in 1921 and 1922. These coins are extremely rare and are worth up to $50,000 according to the 2006 Red Book.

Proofs, Patterns and Specimens.
Proof coins represent the very best of the minter's art. Today, they are manufactured from hand-polished dies, are virtually flawless and are superby presented in customised packaging, with strict limits on production.

Proofs - Coins struck for collectors using specially polished dies.
Proof Set - Group of proof coins of one date, as sold by the mint in the year of issue.
Quarter Eagle - A United States two and a half dollar gold coin.

No proofs were struck of the farthing and the denomination was not included in the Specimen Set of 1902. The blackened finish that was introduced in 1897 on S3964 was maintained on all the farthings of Edward VII.

Only 600 proofs minted, third smallest Proof mintage of type since 1875. This is an outstanding coin, very close to a higher grade, with largely fault free original surfaces, lovely very light toning over lustrous proof mirror fields. $1,100.

A Word On Proofs
A mention of scanning proof coins should be made here. Modern proofs, due to the mirror fields reflect light very very well.

Strike - Proofs tend to be somewhat sharper than business strikes. In fact, most proofs are fully struck. There are a number of exceptions however.

A tiny number of proofstotalling fewer than 1,000 pieceswere struck from 1838 through 1859, with 880 issued in 1858 and 1859 alone. Proof specimens before 1856 are rarely seen. Conversely, with a total of 42.

Beautiful toned proofs from the Prosky hoard. Coincidentally or not, Starting in 1878, it seems that one of the major coin dealers on the era, David Prosky, started buying up all the remaining specimens of the proof cents, 3 cent pieces, ...

The 2006 platinum proofs feature a new reverse design, the Legislative Muse. It's the first in a three-year series called "The Foundations of American Democracy," and the design shows a muse inscribing the nation's law.

Sacagawea dollars are struck for circulation at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, while Proofs are struck in San Francisco. Saint Slang for the Saint-Gaudens inspired double eagle struck from 1907 until 1933.

When the Krugerrand was first issued, both Proofs and
uncirculated (bullion) coins were released.  The Proof issues of 1967 had a

Proofs are usually not made to circulated in commerce. Mishandling can lower the value and grade of a proof coin. Proofs are sold by the mint during their year of production at a premium to cover their special manufacturing costs.

matte proof - matte proof coins are special proofs that have a grainy "sandblasted" look on the surface. Matte proof coins were sometimes made in the early part of the 1900's. Normal proof coins have a mirror like brilliant surface.

The scope of this does not permit any great consideration to be given to the many patterns, proofs, ingots and commemorative coins that have appeared during the short but eventual history of American numismatics.

Proof coins are coins which are specially struck for a variety of purposes - the original purpose, as the name implies, was to prove the die; so the earliest proofs are akin to die trials.

Over 300,000 certified proofs for the printing of United States national bank notes (Figure 52), gold certificates, Treasury certificates, legal tender notes, and many other types were added to our collection.

Special Mint Set A set of special coins-neither business strikes nor Proofs-first struck in limited quantities in 1965 and officially released in 1966-1967- to replace Proof sets, which were discontinued as part of the U.S.

The proofs, patterns and restrikes are not listed below. The 1862 issue is the only one minted in Madras (also minted in Calcutta). The only way to recognize the mint with the 1862 coins is the diameter of the coin, according to current thought.

These Proofs are not of the same quality as the other Proof Morgan dollars. The devices on these specimens usually are not frosted while the fields lack the depth of mirror normally associated with Proofs.

Matte - Proofs coined from 1909-1916 which exhibit a granular sandblast look. They do not have reflective field.
Satin - Proofs struck in a fashion in between a Brilliant and Matte proof.

The term applied to coins, usually Proofs and prooflike coins that have frosted devices and lettering that contrast with the fields. When this is deep the coins are said to be “black and white' cameos.

Key date coins to look for in this period are the 3 cased Barcelona proofs, with the AlBr cased proof and the silver coin fair cased proof commanding values of up to nearly $300 at retail level.

Many proofs are cameo proofs. To prepare a cameo proof coin, the area of the die that creates the background, or field, of the coin is highly polished, and the area of the die that is used to create the raised image is sandblasted.

Normally the fields are highly polished, with the design matte, however matte proofs where the whole coin is matte are known (for example all the 1902 GB proofs), and sometimes even the design is polished.

Nickel three-cent pieces had a slightly longer mint run of 25 years, from 1865 to 1889, though a few of those years saw only proofs produced.

The word LIBERTY is weak and indistinct (particularly on the E and TY) on all specimens of this variety including proofs.

Gold and silver matte proofs have a dull, granular (i.e. sandblasted) finish without any mirror-like qualities. Copper and nickel matte proofs are really more like Roman finish proofs. Also see: Roman Finish ...

Proofs are not made to circulate. Mishandling can lower the grade thus lowering the value of a proof coin. Proofs are sold by the Mint during their year of production at a premium to offset special production costs.

Pre-1968 proofs were made only at the Philadelphia Mint except in a few rare instances in which presentation pieces were struck at branch mints. Current proofs are made at the San Francisco an West Point mints.

While Uncirculated coins are very popular with collections, so are Proofs. These are coins that were struck for presentation purposes or made expressly for collectors.

Although very rarely seen, these are attainable grades, since Specimens and Proofs are generally double struck on specially prepared, polished blanks using specially prepared dies on a slow, high pressure press, ...

In the 1970s, Walter Breen attributed both matte and satin proofs for 1921 and 1922. However, US Mint records for 1922 make no mention of the satin proofs, so their attribution rests solely on Breen's analysis.

Today, most proofs have frosted highlights.
Mint Lustre
The bloom on the surface on an uncirculated numismatic object resulting from the radial flow of metal caused by striking with dies.

Since there are millions of proof sets that could be broken apart and each coin certified, the number of these high grade proofs are sure to increase. I do not believe that the supply and demand for such coins will stabilize for many years.

Burnishing lines - Lines resulting from burnishing. Typically seen on open-collar Proofs and almost never observed on close-collar Proofs.
Business strike - A coin which was struck for use in general circulation.

Patterns and proofs are produced for various reasons, one likely reason would be to undertake 'market research' and get public and other reaction to the new coin. When the coin was issued in 1849, it proved unpopular.

The first Kennedy half dollars made for distribution were proofs coined early in 1964. The number of Kennedy halves produced during 1964 was enormous. Despite this, the coins continued to disappear as fast as they were issued.

The proofs are sold for prices around $3000 and the ones of less quality sell at prices all can afford. For more info about the 1876 silver trade dollar you just have click the dollar image to see the full detailed 1876 dollar page.

In the last year of her reign the London mintmaster, Isaac Newton, oversaw the production of a few farthings, most of which were proofs, but a few may have been made for circulation.
