Being somewhat of a numismatic purist and traditionalist, to say nothing of being an idealist, my quick answer to the question, "Should I buy a large quantity of common coins or a small quantity of rare ones?

The quantity melted was determined by weight. Anyone could have substituted other cartwheels for their 1964-D samples. Therefore, it is not surprising that Barry Krause and other writers continue to theorize that 1964-D Peace Dollars do exist.

Quality not quantity. Higher quality coins are much rarer than lower quality coins. They also offer the greatest aesthetic pleasure and are more likely to attract serious collector demand.
Invest in the rarest coins you can afford.
Quality Not Quantity: Let's say that you have a coin budget of $20,000 per year. I would suggest that you purchase four or five really nice $4000-$5000 coins each year than twenty $1000 pieces.
